Adventures & Photography of a Kuching Kayaker & His Wet Life

This past week I’ve been hearing from people who having attended a seminar/workshop are enthused about changing the world with their organic garbage! Then I started receiving invitations via email from people known and unknown to attend garbage enzyme workshops by a certain Dr Joean Oon.
Having no idea as to what garbage this “garbage enzyme” was I ‘googled’ it and came up with this website.
Garbage enzyme is the solution to recover our ozone layer and lower the global temperature. Come and discover how you can change your kitchen waste to useful enzyme. Garbage enzyme can be use as natural households cleaner, air purifier, insecticide, detergent, bodycare, car care, organic fertilizer and many more. If everyone of us reduce 45% of garbage than we don’t need to have more landfill around us.

There’s not a lot of hard scientific information (surely there must be a scientific name instead of just “garbage enzyme”!) on the website as I would have like to see and insufficient information on the actual detail usage; but anything to save the planet is a noble cause. I just hope that it’s not just garbage information as Garbage Enzyme is really easy to produce.

I’d been feeling really lethargic for the past few weeks and the light workout at the gym after work didn’t really help that much. But the sight of this really nice evening rainbow as I walked to my car really helped lift my spirits.
So did the really nice Robin Wong who mentioned ‘unker’ in his post on Kuching back in May (but which I’d only just noticed! Oops!) accompanied by some really great photos which amongst lots of other nice things is a hallmark of his blog.
2 Saturdays back, after lunch I decided to drive to Simunjan with my other half after someone mentioned to me that he saw dolphins while on the ferry ride crossing the mighty Batang Sadong river. This person doesn’t drink and is quite serious and this is something that I’ve got to check out for sure. I love ferry rides anyway.
However we did not get to see any dolphins but I managed to capture these moody shots while waiting for and on the ferry “Primrose II” itself. After getting across Batang Sadong; Simunjan on the right is 22kms away while Sebangan and Sebuyau on the left is respectively 17kms and 43kms away. Due to a lack of time we did not check out Sebangan nor Sebuyau but I would one day.
Oh, and the drive (we only saw a few vehicles) to sleepy Simunjan and back is rather uninteresting except for the fact that you can ‘help yourselves’ to the abundant bananas and papayas lining the gravel road sides. It’s really sad a pity that there were no durians. *sigh*

It has been a while but I went kayaking at Borneo Highlands with a few of my office colleagues and their relatives and friends. We put in at Bengoh and take out at Kg. Semadang. Except for Desmond, it was the first time kayaking experience for them and there were a few thrilling spills at the rapids!
It was a brilliant sunny day and we all had a brilliant time. I should be doing this more often! Just take a look at these brilliant photos to see what I mean.
While I’m on the topics of outrageous buildings in China; here’s another spectacular one that is being proposed for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.
I think the design doctrine these days is to do it “just because I can!”. That’s the way it is for cheap thrills and ‘up yours’ mentality! Same as the egoistical attitude of some bullying senior executive who try to cover up their incompetence and insecurities by finding faults with others while avoiding making the hard decisions.*sigh*
Here’s the description and the images of this striking design in the form or a human character in this inhumane world.
The REN Building is a proposal for a hotel, sports and conference center for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The building is conceived as two buildings merging into one. The first building, emerging from the water, is devoted to the activities of the body, and houses the sports and water culture center.
The second building emerging from land, is devoted to the spirit and enlightment, and houses the conference center and meeting facilities.
The two buildings meet in a 1000 room hotel, a building for living.
The building becomes the Chinese sign for ‘The People’, and a recognizable landmark for the World Expo in China.
REN building in Shanghai - a symbol of human or the dominance of human over this planet or the inhumane nature of man?
A colleague emailed me this story which I think is quite apt following my post on “Dubai Waterfront”; and which is a clear indictment of the insanity of man’s greed and excesses.
You can read the full story – “Mall of Misfortune” from “The Nation” here.
With 7 million square feet (that’s nearly TWICE the size of Mid Valley MegaMall, the largest shopping mall in Malaysia) of floor space, it is the largest retail and entertainment development in the world – and it is empty! Developed by Hu Guirong, an instant-noodle billionaire in China after his team had spent two years traveling the world – France, Italy, Nevada – in search of ideas (but not their heads) and by the end of which was designed by design consultants, Ian Thomas of the Thomas Consulting Group in Vancouver. Suddenly super-rich egomaniac chinaman cowboy developer meets slick talking foreign conman consultants and this is the result. Change the race and it sounds like a familiar Asian story with a similar sad ending story. *sigh*
Here are more photos taken from the news story on this “Mall of Madness”! And captions are, I think, unnecessary. What a waste and how insane - just like what is happening at my work place! *sigh*
WET TALK:
I wonder if I am making cursed calls! First I rang Bev to ask if she could guide a trip for me next Friday and she told me that she’s scheduled for an appendicitis operation in the afternoon. Then I called Kevin to ask him the same thing and he sickly replied that he is down with Malaria! If you are my friend – please DO NOT take my calls!
Kuching Sky, 24th June 2008.
I didn’t go to the gym after work yesterday evening but chose instead to go for a ride instead which I’m glad I did as I manage to capture this fire in the evening sky. Not the most spectacular of fiery skies I’d captured but a darn fine sight to see nonetheless compared to the “beh song” (sourpuss) face that I’m unfortunately forced to endure with at work. Amongst other unpleasantness, this is a prime example of a negative person trying to cover up his incompetence and indecision by finding faults with and talking down other people. And I wonder how long this nonsense will be allowed to carry on while those in the lower pecking order suffers. *sigh*
The nature of things and life: beautiful skies and ugly people.
Dubai Waterfront or now known as “Waterfront”. Indeed.
I was looking for some images for a waterfront development when I came across this stunning image of the proposed Dubai Waterfront which undoubtedly will become the largest largest waterfront and largest man-made development in the world.
If the biggest and loudest turns you on; then you should checkout the gallery here for the kind of man-made (or man mad?) monstrosity that is going right there. Now you know where the world’s resources (apart from China) are being wasted channeled. *sigh*
Downtown Dubai in the very near future.
But on the other hand; if you are looking for a much higher pay or if you’re just damn sick of your cheapskate workplace - then this should be where you should be headed! Good luck.
Watch out Disney World Resort - Dubailand will take over as the #1 tourist world destination. Yes - the world’s getting more and more insane.
I’m never too sleepy or lazy to notice interesting cloud formations - and an uncanny knack in doing so!
It’s not for a lack of ideas or things to blog about; quite to the contrary. It’s just that whenever I find the time or inclination to sit down in front of my notebook, I feel incredibly lazy drowsy! *sigh*
On account of my lethargic state, I’m not inclined to think of a clever caption for the above strange clouds that I snapped. Any suggestions anyone? *yawn* Thanks!
