I was happily paddling along and as I glanced backwards to maintain visual contact with Mimik I noticed that a small fish was following me! (I was on a faster sit-in kayak and Mimik was ’struggling’ to keep up on his shorter & beamy sit-on-top. His smoking certainly does not help.)
I turned to change course to see if the fish will still follow me - and it did! Then it dawned on me that instead of just savouring the moments; I’d better take a few snap shots of this cute but hideously looking fish - in case you folks might think that I am making this story up … Its probably thinking that my chilli-red kayak is his big grand-daddy or errr, long lost uncle?
I managed to grab these only 2 shots before the camera-shy fish decided to dive back into the depths of the ocean and disappeared completely out of sight!

I blogged this when I first started blogging last July. I don’t think anyone was reading my blog then! So I’ve taken the liberty to re-post it again!
FH2o, would you believe me if I said I’ve read this post? Yes, I have. My time-stamp is incorrect. It’s now 11:04pm, just after your post.
happysurfer! i believe u lah! like u believe my ’small fish’ story rite? heehee
I’ve lost you here. It’s a true story, isn’t it? I thought the fish looks kinda pretty.
haha.. I have read this, glad u are reposting it for the sake of your new Fans!
hey! I got to know about your blog through Kenny Sia. Good work there. Love to hear more stories about nature & Sarawak. Would love to visit Sarawak now that I read your blog…
Oriental cute.
FH2O - old or new, thanks for post. Great pics of that interesting looking fish. All my years of kayking off Maui, I never had a fish do that. Fun stuff.
I had been informed that this is a type of poisonous rock fish! I was tempted but luckily I didn’t touch it. So this fish is actually not that ‘cute’ afterall!
But definitely not as toxic and obnoxious as some slime who had crapped at the chatbox!
Refer to “The fishes of Kuching rivers”, page 184, it is called toad fish. Scientific name: Halophryne hutchinsi.
U can get this book at Times bookstore near Parkson.
jungle mike - thanks for indentifying the fish! u were the one who informed me via email that this fish is poisonous!
wah poisonious fish and toxic craB..
this blog is getting HOT HOT HOT!
That is a cute fish…cute but lethal.
miracle8 - meet fellow croc, oops I mean lawyer Robin from spore!
According to that new reference book that I bought, it didn’t say that fish is poisonous. Anyway, it’s better don’t touch those wierd stuff using bare hand. I suggest wear the glove if your hands are itchy…ha!ha!
jungle mike - maybe those people who publish the reference book need to go kayaking in order to identify ‘em properly! thks!
