For the first time, everyone was waiting for me instead of me waiting for them in front of my house at
We reached Kg Sijingkat and unloaded our kayaks under dark sky and the curious watchful stares of the local kampung kids.
Our plan was to explore Loba Batu Blat, a major tributary of the Sarawak River which connects with Batang Samarahan. Trouble is that it lies across on the other side of the river and we had to cross a busy shipping lane to get there. So we had to sit it out waiting for two ships to pass. Joe suggested we play ‘chicken’ with them. Waking up too early must have messed up his thinking and judgement!
Finally the ships cleared and as we raced across to Loba Batu Blat in the wakes of the passing ships, Dayang and Joe were all smiles eager to explore this never before kayaked river!
Loba Batu Blat, though its a tributary, is wide and straight before it starts meandering much further downstream. It is a good thing that it is wide as, errr, how do I put it delicately; we were not exactly tracking a straight line! I was taking the stern (back) position with KS at the bow. First we were going left and then right and I had to take corrective strokes to keep us on track. I was hoping that KS would tire soon (like Kenny on our last trip) but no such luck as the more we veered, the more determined he became! In the end I gave up and resort to taking photos while I left KS to his own devices to meander down the river!
Dayang got so bored waiting for us to catch up that she had to resort to all sorts of antics to amuse herself!
While Joe found a rather unorthodox way to ease himself with a paddle as support! Although later he admitted that he was more worried about ‘ngap ngap’ (mr. croc!) rather than me blogging him. Since you asked for it, I’ll have to oblige! To add insult to injury, Joe even had time to make a couple of calls while we play catch up!
The overcast sky turned dark suddenly and we took the chance (excuse!) to head back.
We had been out for nearly an hour and half by then.
Halfway back, it started to rain and we were well, paddling and just paddling in the rain!
Then we reached the part where we have to cross the shipping lanes but fortunately the course was clear but the currents and wind were not! There were small whitecaps and crosscurrents and I had to put away my camera to concentrate on the paddling. I tried to avoid an area where the water was particularly turbulent and guess what - we were carried by the strong currents straight into it! We nearly capsized as KS did a ‘dance’ up at the bow and I leaned furiously for us to stay upright! From then on I paddled non-stop until the houses on stilts at Kp Sijingkat was in sight! PHEW!
I don’t think Joe, Dayang and myself would be paddling Loba Batu Blat again anytime soon! So who was it that was saying that I painted an overly unrealistic rosy picture about kayaking in Kuching? Certainly not KS the trouper as he was all smiles and in high spirits over our saturday morning kayaking adventure despite the meandearing and the mean currents!

ehmm..was asked by unker for that one. I knew he’d blog it..well its a good back stretch on a kayak anyway..:P but yeah..don’t think I like paddling there. sort of reminded me of my marathon training. nothing much to see.
dayang = 9lives?
Good morning
u go kayaking every weekend?
9lives - any more ‘complains’ n no more kayakin with unker in future!
mangroovedan - yeah, one n d same
chen - some people tennis, golf or goof on the weekends. Guess what? I kayak lor! ;o)
The picture of local kampung kid really stand out from the rest of…kayak shots :p But then you had so many pictures in a single post, every post! Wow! :)))
Kayak instead of tennis, golf…wise choice? Happy kayaking ok!
aiya unker..not complaining la..hehe.. so when’s the trip to rambungan? not this saturday I hope..got class to teach..:(
hi dan, so who did u think i was?
9lives… i thought u just a regular reader. anyway… hello to you. hope to meet u one day during one of the kayaking trips.
hmmm… this place look familiar.. or does most river in Sarawak looks the same..
most impt.. got prawn or not?
I like the picture of the kid in the window too. A lingering look of curiosity framed by weathered planks.
mangroovedan - introducing dayang aka 9lives, female kayak-racer-par-excellence … but still can’t keep up with unker ler! kekeke
9lives - wah! so fast one ah? ur boyfriend sure get jealous if u spent every weekends with me!
robin - only to the uninitiated! sort of like we all look d same to ang-mohs and they the same to us! seriously they look similar but are different and in certain locale the differences are striking. u need to paddle more rivers with me lah birdy!
agus - to think that I nearly wanted to omit that shot!
my favourite is the 4th last shot of dayang paddling in the light with the dark sky and dark reflection seemingly ‘chasing’ her.
Yeah, that tells a story as well. She must have got scared and decided not to get caught in the rain. Paddling like ‘lipas kudung’ and glancing at the darkening sky, she prays to avoid a water break incident.
Heheh, sorry dayang, can’t help it.
dan - yeah. hope to meet you during the next trip
unker- hehe..don’t want to beat you in the race la. plus, this is my initial training before the real session some time end of feb or early march.
agus - comment all you want abt the pic. never like dark skies actually. would be scared i guess if it were to be even darker than that.
The pics of the kid in the window and Dayang under the dark clouds are special.
Miss your comments on Pacific-Islander - hint hint. (not to be a nag, like someone we know)
Perhaps it is the holidays. Perhaps I need to post another kayak adventure. Well, I will do so very soon.
eh unker, you got so much free time to kayak instead of going to the office izit?? darn, i KNEW i should have gone into architecture instead~
eh, wait. i realise it’s for the 4th of feb. cis!
why nobody call you UNCLE? because unker sounds like anchor which you throw into the murky sarawak river.
=P
Dayang, I would have panicked myself. Nothing like a rain strom in the middle of a wide river to pedal like mental. And you go “great, all I need now is a lightning strike and I’ll be in heaven.” Really.
panda - ooops! would u believe that i had visited some sites but are on occasion, lost for words?
silveraven - for far too many years i had immersed myself totally into architecture - live, eat n breathe design (i still get inspirations in the showers though!) and 12-14 hours work days are d norm and weekends are never in my vocab! i wished that i had discovered kayakin sooner! there’s more to life than just work, work, work - there’s KAYAKING! :o)
Agus - still would prefer dark skies without lightning
Unker - when would i get the chance to try that sit-in kayak of yours? Can race you in that one
