Chillout & Relax @ CHILAX

by FH2o on February 19, 2006

I don’t normally do reviews of food and beverage outlets and hangout places but (there’s always a ‘but‘ in life) because it is such a unique and original concept and in a class of its own (I love originality); I’m going to make an exception for Chilax located along Jalan Song around the corner from Upwell Supermarket, away from the normal hangout places in Kuching. What is so unique about this place that impresses me last night? For starters, they don’t want (or need) any publicity (I am not supposed to even blog this! Um, sorry gals! But I should really share this) and they are only opened from Thursdays to Sundays only; and opening hours are from 7 pm till late. Although Chilax has not ‘officially’ opened; they had already catered to several private functions already. Run by mavis, lynnette, angie and pheys, four of the nicest and most enthusiastic and creative (they designed all the interiors) individuals I had the pleasure to meet; Chilax is unique in what it does not offer – alcoholic drinks, cigarettes (sorry no smoking), TV and food. You can get these at all the other places. What it offers are great drinks, snacks, ambience, music (great CDs selections - just ask), tatami mats, comfortable sofas, latest magazines, comics, books, board games and wait for this, toys!. The décor is modern, tasteful chic and you should check out the toilets!

You must be thinking that this place must cost an arm and a leg; good news is that it doesn’t cost anymore than comparable (although there’s no comparison really) joints. I had a mango smoothie (no sugar added) for RM8/- and it was great with real mango taste and flavour.

Mavis (head honco) would kill me for saying this (but she’ll have to catch me first and I’ve got longer legs!); but for the discerning, you owe it to yourself to check out this very special place – sorry but you’ll have to wait till Thursday and only after 7 pm! Go chillout and relax at the coolest (best kept secret) place in Kuching by far. Wait till they get their coffee act together and this’ll be where I’ll chillout often! Oh! And don’t tell mavis, lynnette, angie and pheys that you saw it here!

First to comment :D
This place is newly opened?
I passed by that area several times few months back but never noticed it..
Is it somewhere nearby the Pizza place?

Selba February 20, 2006 at 1:03 am

hmmm… nice :)

so how to get to Kuching?

FH2O February 20, 2006 at 1:13 am

selba - u can kayak but the hassles of organising a month-long expedition is a bit much for a neophyte!

Better to take a flight here. There are daily direct (Batavia Air, I believe) 1 hour flights from Pontianak to Kuching; which has direct connecting fights from Jakarta.

yeah, it’s quite near my house and i’ve sorta driven by a couple of times but never actually went in. perhaps i should…

Pandabonium February 20, 2006 at 1:42 am

Vey cool. Prices sound reasonable, it’s the transporation that will kill me.
Great interior design.

Sounds like a chick place. And with four ladies to greet you, (and chase you) I’ve no doubt it’ll be your no. 1 joint.

9lives February 20, 2006 at 2:25 am

maybe can have the bloggers meet or kayakers meet there then eh ;)

Happysurfer February 20, 2006 at 3:09 am

Pandabonium, no worries. You could make a stopover there on your way to Fiji. That’s a thought, eh?

Agus, right on! You are so clever. hahahahah………

FH2o, looks like you’ve found your little cosy corner.

Hi jeremy c! u must have come here from Sisuahlai! Warm welcome, Sir!
This place is not like all the other places (travilion/padungan) which are all basically more of the same trying to ‘out-zen’ or ‘out-happen’ each other. Chilax is refreshingly different.

panda - yeah, pity about the transportation!

agus - i’m sure u can give me a hand when u’re here next.

9lives - no lah! i like the place quiet and secluded as it is now … nice place for u to go read gibran

happysurfer - airasia KL-Kuching’s very cheap cheap cheap!

Please tell me where it is when I go back. I promise I’ll keep my mouth zip. ^_^

fish fish,
When I go back to Kuching next time, we go there yam char..
That place is located in Jalan Song, near the Upwell Supermarket and near the Pizza Junction (Eddie’s friend, kktan’s pizza shop) :)

Yeah maybe bring the noise some place else eh.

Robin February 20, 2006 at 5:45 am

I always prefer place with good food than good ambience..

But this looks great…

March… ok!

Amelia February 20, 2006 at 6:05 am

Thanks for the review… Will chk it out the next time I’m in town… :)

Gette February 20, 2006 at 7:33 am

*takes note*

A non alcoholic hangout - sounds like a place for me. Its just an 8 minutes drive from where I stay :) I will try it ut but hey, when you say they are unofficially opened does it mean that they have yet to get the proper license. Or else we will be roped in while enjoying our mangos and appear in TV3’s 999 for going to an illegal outlet :)

Uchu Keling February 20, 2006 at 8:05 am

Good concept. Will check it out during my next trip.

FH2O February 20, 2006 at 8:28 am

robin - ok for march!

amelia - yup

gette - okie

desmond - the ladies running the place are more professional than u or me … this is a top-notch place and certainly way above board. ‘unofficial’ only in the sense that they want to get the place perfect before they make any big hoo-hah about it - that’s why they were reluctant for me to blog it. it’s not the place for the louds and wannabes. its a classy n exclusive place for those in the know - readers of this site lah! *ahem*

Desmond February 20, 2006 at 9:07 am

No lah…before it becomes famous I better take a peek at it..sooner or later it will be a place for ‘The Rich & Famous’ of this City…..when you step in, people will say, Ooohh…its that guy…. but when ordinary people like me step in, it will be, Who is that guy? Is he lost

Gette February 20, 2006 at 9:26 am

Well, why don’t we all go pay a visit this Thursday? I’m a bit behind on meeting the new crop of Kuching bloggers. It’s pretty near my house too.

On my part, I’m quite happy to keep quiet until they are ready for an official opening. ;-)

Desmond February 20, 2006 at 6:12 pm

Gette - better ask Francis. The owners will know someone has publicise their place when they see so many people coming there at one time - and we are all refering to his blog :) don want Francis to get into trouble with those charmed owners… :)

FH2O February 20, 2006 at 9:18 pm

… I had been inspired …
See my new posting kekeke! :)

Puteri February 21, 2006 at 12:38 pm

Looks like a pretty nice place. Next time I am in Kuching, I’d like to check it out, maybe with some bloggers in Kch? Heheh

FH2O February 21, 2006 at 11:25 pm
