(A Field Guide to) The Fishes of Kuching Rivers, Sarawak

by FH2o on February 24, 2006

To think that I nearly overlooked this; but fortunately I chanced upon The annotated budak’s review of this book in his site.

A Field Guide to the Fishes of Kuching Rivers, Sarawak by Katherine Atak, a British biologist; just been published last month is of particular interests to me as it covers Sungei Sarawak, Sungai Maong and Sungai Kuap; three rivers that I had paddled on many occasions. Hopefully I would in time be able to identify some of the one hundred and two species described with detailed information on the appearance, habitat and distribution in this book. At last now I know how to call the long-snouted pipefish by its proper name!

Time for me to get educated on tropical estuarine biology and I wondered if the good lady biologist makes any mention of the other bigger four-legged inhabitants of the Kuching Rivers! Kayaking anyone?

Kayaking - let’s go. Bring the masks and snorkels and we’ll have a look at those fish.

Can I borrow the book for a read when I go home? The front page fish, it’s been one of my favorite watching its actions. Very cuteeeeee!!!

carcar - TQ kindly. Another new viewer from spore is most welcomed!

jungle mike - no I don’t know Marcus, yet; but would in time I’m sure! I’m going to get the book this weekend.

Hi, I enjoy reading your blog.

In the 90’s used to go to Bintulu quite often for project work. I luv the Kuching airport laksa. Wonder if its still there.

Another Sporean.

The front page fish has proptosis or exopthalmus :P

chen - its a mudskipper and for simpletons like yours truly, protruding eyes will do instead of proptosis or exopthalmus! ;)

btw i’d better tweak my profile pic a bit as i look like someone from the indian subcontinent … (although there’s nothing wrong with that of course!)
