Turning 15 ... or is it (Goin on 15 and Turnin 50!)

posted by FH2o

Bloggers are funny people; or rather bloggers like me are funny people. Funny in that although we maybe be baring our soul in the public domain without an apparent care on what people may say or think, since it’s our own ‘private’ (huh?) domain but on the other hand we get sensitive if someone makes an adverse comment or worst if no one makes any comment! Whatever happened to our sense of self-worth? Also after a while, we have to remind ourselves to be mindful of ours and our family’s privacy as we become less and less anonymous as snippets of our daily lives (both in words and pictures) invariably gets revealed. It takes more energy to tell a lie and I do not have an inexhaustible supply (of energy); so I blog it as it is. Although Kuching is the capital city of Sarawak; it's still a small town and you and I know that unfortunately, there are some hurtful and hateful people out there.

I started this blog when a friend suggested that I post my kayaking photos I used to email out to friends (and get NO replies or feedback) on a blog as he was sick (or was it lazy) of having to forward my pics to his other friends who ‘loved’ my photos. So I signed up on blogger in June last year and started mucking around with it with some tentative posts and exploring the user interface. So in drips and drabs, I started to blog around July/August last year; feeling all the while like I was ranting to myself. Then sometime in late October I met this guy who was lurking (loitering) outside my house when I just got out of the water and I invited him and his friends in as they expressed so much interest (lawyers are good actors) in my lifestyle (didn't know I had one!), house and the jetty. Anyway when Robin went back to Singapore; we started to use our blogs (he also has a dormant blog like mine then) to keep in touch with each other. In his blog entry he described me as a 'strange but wonderful guy'. Hmmm. Somehow or the other we also visited other people’s blogs and before we knew it we started to have this wonderful circle of friends who visited each other regularly!

Curious as to how many visitors there are to my site, I installed a counter on the 1st of December 2005 after my birthday (when I also changed my template) and now my blog is approaching 15,000 hits since then. It’s nothing in comparison to the well known bloggers (who may get that number in a single day!) but it’s a big figure to this uncle who derives no income whatsoever from this blog; nor am I seeking popularity or approval. It has now become a bad habit - a daily routine and though I tried not to think or make too much about it; there had been adjustments for me and my family to accomodate this obssession pastime. Never in my wildest reckoning would I had imagined that people would be interested in my kayaking, photos and reflections or find them vaguely entertaining. A number of you had become regulars and weird though it may sound, I feel your presence. And I value it and I hope you'll still be reading this when I turn 100!

Joe, now my regular kayaking buddy (who as a non-kayaker met me through my blog) and non-blogger likens my blog to “an easy listening” FM station! I guess he meant it in the nicest possible way and I feel honored that people, young or young-at-heart, would seek me out as an ‘easy listening’ respite in the 'blogosphere' by coming here. I'll keep this blog going for a little while longer as there are still a number of things I don't know and want to learn how to do it properly. If the young punks can do it, so can this uncle and probably perhaps better too! I'd always enjoyed photography but it's only now that I'd discovered writing and I'm learning how to make these sentences 'sing'. And to find my own style.

I have ranted enough, so although they have nothing to do with this post, here are two pics of some red ants infesting one of the mangrove tree and one of clouds; and no, I don’t think there are 15,000 of them there!

Thank you for choosing to spend your time here. I feel honoured and I appreciate your attention and thought on our journey through life. I send you my love.

Cool Clouds. :)
wow! 15000 in three months! that's amazing! Took me a year to get to 10K. Well, it's probably all us people in cold places wallowing in your lovely warm-weather pix. I like the new thing you're doing with the photos btw. And yesterday's rainy-day tropical garden shots were delicious (it wasn't even really that hot in Florida but I'm just hating being cold again, boo hoo). Trying to cajole myself into a walk out on the boardwalk at Coney Island, pretty blustery today & might have some good surf.
Gd morning!! I have to say your blog appeals to a wide range of fellowbloggers. Keep it up
hey hey,
to me blogging has become a ritual as well, waking up and first thing on the compuer on blogs, and same thing before i go to sleep.
But i guess it is always interesting to explore the bits and pieces of other people's lives, especially those that we do not quite have on our own. Not many people out there do now about kayaking, and you have done in such good manner in your own unique ways to promote it !! Good job on that... and of course.. I for one love the beauty of nature.. your photos on Sarawak and the rivers are just fantastic.
Keep on the good work !!
Unker, I really love the way you are writing this post, so cute especially the phrase "they expressed so much interest (lawyers are good actors)" Hahaha...

Well, by blogging we actually increase of our knowledge and learn something else outside our ordinary real life, not only new stuff but also new characthers of people.

Tell you a little secret, I used to be affraid of malaysian people but then since am blogging I learn that malaysian are not so scary as I thought (95% of my visitors are malaysian)and am really glad to have a chance to get to know chen, robin, jellyfish and especially you who will become my personal kayaking instructor, yipeeeee :)
narrie - enjoy!

bonnie - I should have put a counter in on day one to get a more accurate picture of the number of visitors; but I knew nuts about stuff like that then. Not that I know a lot now either! Thks!

it's my life story - thks! i'll just keep on paddling along!

robinwong - ah! d joys n perils (eats up time) of blogging!

selba - hmmm so robins are more sensible to be afraid of fireflies n snakes rather than msians!
I'm sure u'll make a good student! :)
as usual..u r one famous celebrity
hehehe...
Ay, did you miss the little birdie in my profile picture so much that you decided to have one on your shoulder? And although only the duck shows it's true colors, it's still cute. You should see the smile on my face right now!

P/s: Nice heartfelt post. I'm honored to be in this wonderful circle.
jellyfish - thks (i'm no celeb) and u need to get out of the house more often! we go for nice makan when I next go to KL ok? unker buy! :)

agus - join me n jelly ok? rope in happysurfer too!
yes, in this wonderful circle of life. hope we don't keep goin around in circles though!
I'm not at all surprised at the visitor count FH20, (horribly jealous, yes, but surprised, no). Your topic is interesting, you pictures are great, and your writing is down to earth and personal. What's not to like?
I am blushing now from Pandabonium's flattering remarks! Thanks but you're being too kind, really!
hahaha,,, why so sentimental suddenly..

15000 or 1500, we must have each contributed to our daily ritual of putting up our post, checking on each other's site, reading those kick-a*s comment..

I must say blogging is a good relaxation from my otherwise stressful and boring work at the office.. but it is picking up.. haha..

Glad to have met everyone here.
FH2o, that is so sweet - mushy but sweet. Glad that our paths crossed. I've learned much from everyone's experience and generosity in sharing. Thank you, All.
Count me in! Jellyfish, Happysurfer and I will spread the news and the carpet; green or grey if we can't find any red nearby.
yeah.. we get to know more people via blogging and expand our circle of friends from different culture, different religion, different profession and different background.. Just like, the first time I met Fish Fish in CooknEngr's house (that was during CNY in 2004), I haven't started blogging yet.. but I do read blogs on and off at that time..And I happened to read her blog as well. As time goes on, I started blogging as well.. and now it becomes routine.

Selba afraid of Malaysian people initially? :D
We don't bite people leh :D
actually i dnt read yr blog la. ...well, you always had that punchline somewhere that can really draw my attention OK ! congrats :0

Getting sentimental in our old age are we!:) It's good to know you and you're blog's interesting. Keep up ther jolly good work!
Sentimental, mushy, old and occassionally scary!
Now I know why ppl come here! :)
Nice post. Great insights.
Hi fh2o (whateve that means?). I blog-hopped from Chun See's. Kayaking is not really my thing, but I really like your positive outlook in life. I can't help smiling when I read your "About Me" intro. Yes, "life does happen regardless of us", and we should treasure the day and live today as if it's our last, never missing "the ride"!

Thankfully, your blog is not just about kayaking. I've learned a great deal about kuching from Kennysia's blog, and now from yours too. It's a place I hope to visit someday. I recall vaguely an article in the Straits Times that featured you, fh2o.

Love what I see. Will visit again!

Cheers!
derrick - thks!

chris - u r most welcomed here! as in a lot of sports/hobbies; there're parallels with life. we might not be aware of it thats all.
FHo is the initial for Francis Ho. H2o is water. Hence FH2o!
It was the now defunct 'Sarawak Tribune' that u read the article in the Outlook section.

Do visit Kuching and after trying the kolomee n sarawak laksa and taken in the sights of cats statues; u may want to explore the rivers!
Lawyers are only good actors when they need to be. Take off their robes and they are just like anyone else, who could do with reading a refreshing and positive blog for a change (Take my word for it, seriously). Like reading your blog, for example. Your pictures are beautifully captured, and your posts very well written. Its good to know that there are more things in life to look foward to, rather than just the mundane 9-5 job which could rob one's sanity if one is not careful ;)
Keep up the good work! :D
i'm trying not to be rude while walking through ur door so..... "HI" => this should be more official line now.. heehee..

Congrats on hitting 15000.. may you get 10x that soon :p

I will just browsing through your blog and I like your blog for the meaningful words and beautiful, breathtaking (hold breath) photographs.. :p
miracle8 - lawyers or not, we are all playing a "role" in this life. so we better play it well!
thks for your kind comments!

chocolove - glad that u like the words n pics as I like 'em too! u're way too kind with your compliments - but i like it! TQ! :)
