‘Bubuk’ (Shrimp) Season in Miri

by FH2o on March 16, 2006

I read with interest in the local newspaper here this week that the ‘bubuk’ or shrimp season is back in Miri at last after several weeks of anxious waiting. (Click on the scanned image of this news item to enlarge to read) No mention is made of how long the season will last.

As I read that the further out to sea you go, the more shrimp there are, prompted the thought that perhaps harvesting the shrimps from a kayak would be the most efficient and least obtrusive way to go about it. No need for jostles and arguments for prime fishing spots on the beaches. Are there any Miri readers out there who can shed light on this shrimp phenomenal and how long would the season last? I would love to go over on the weekends to play “sakai tourist” and to document this shrimp season. What a lame excuse to go kayaking in Miri!

Talking about bizzare and fishy phenomena there is actually a website called GOD HATES SHRIMP!; which in actual fact is just a parody.

And who doesn’t like shrimps anyway? Not me; whether big or small, I love ‘em! Yummy!

Count me in too!!

Except one dish though, the jumping drunken prawns, where they serve the jumping live prawn in a glass bowl and then pour whisky right in front of you to see the prawns get ‘drunken’ and die a painful death.

Yaks, I dun have any appetite after that sight.

robin - how do u know that the prawns ‘feels’ pain? they could be deliriously happy on their drunken journey to shrimp heaven! ;)

I don’t order drunken prawns anymore too after witnessing the same scenario that Robin described. That was several years ago. In fact I was just telling my friends yesterday and describing how it was prepared. Seeing how it was done has put me off that dish.

Those are shrimp? No,no,no. These are shrimp and apparently I’m going to hell for eating them. :) http://www.lafishmag.com/8500.html

The only thing I have against eating shrimp (and I do eat them from time to time) is the negative effect that large scale aquaculture has on mangrove environments and water quality. But that is a matter of knowing where your shrimp are from.

Actually, God hates Gay Shrimp!
