Livan and Lohong are Lovin’ it … in the Rain!

posted by FH2o

On some Saturday mornings, the birds are singing and the sun is shining and everything just looks wonderful with amazing blue skies and cloud formations. But it wasn’t anything like this when we decided to go kayaking this Saturday morning! It was raining with dark skies and the weather was simply miserable!

After getting soaked putting the kayaks on top of our car racks; we headed towards Rambungan with everyone thinking that I must know what I was doing as I assured them that the rain cannot last forever and that the sun’s going to break through the cloud covers at anytime. I was wrong.

With the rain and the King Tide just receding when we got to the put-in; Livan and Lohon, two adventurous sisters apprehensively pointed out that the currents were moving a bit fast and I reassured them that it was ‘manageable’. The 'manageable' currents took us to reach the beach in record time of less than half an hour instead of the usual hour over long trip. I picked a sheltered bay to get off and the two sisters wandered off to explore the storm battered beach. Battered it was as entire trees were uprooted! KS remarked that it looked as if the place has just been strucked by a tsunami; and it does! Luckily I'm not a superstitious person or else KS would had gotten wacked with a paddle! Coupled with the rain, the atmosphere was bleak but not our spirits!

As we play beach-combers, Joe decided to get some re-entry practice with his sit-on-top kayak; a requisite I had mentioned to him if he wants to join me sea kayaking. After explaining the general concept to him Joe then gave it a go and promptly flipped himself over the other side of the kayak! But after several exhausting (“this is not so easy ler unker!”) tries, Joe managed to re-enter his kayak with claps from Dayang, Azmi and KS who were being entertained by Joe’s performance. I was thinking that if we were really out at sea and with the waves and currents, Kenny Sia would have a better chance of completing the marathon than Joe getting back on his kayak! KS decided to have a go as well and he did much better by getting back on with his first attempt. Finally Azmi (racing kayak champion) showed how it’s done by lithely mounting the kayak effortlessly both from the sides and front of the kayak. Show off!It was raining the entire time without any signs of letting up and so we decided to go back without waiting for the tide to be in our favour. I was with Livan on a double while Azmi was with Lohong and pretty soon we left Joe, Dayang and KS far far behind in their singles. So, who’s calling who ‘unker’?

Eventually we were back at the jetty and Livan and Lohong were all smiles as they waved us goodbye; glad that they had done something different and interesting this weekend. They were lovin’ it despite the rain and weather! I mean just take a look at the photos of us having fun in the rain! Kayaking in the rain anyone?

nice leh kayaking at rambungan. too bad i can't join. :P
Robin - no lightning and no sun ... we prefer no lightning!

mangroovedan - why not?
Woah Robin, that's a striking comment! The last thing kayakers want to hear when paddling under the rain is lightning or the mention of it. But then again, someone did mention tsunami. Now I'm curious; how dangerous is it to paddle in a rainstorm, when there's lightning?
agus - its every kayaker's nightmare when you're out on the open waters with lightning bolts flashing overhead! luckily/mercifully i had not been caught in a big one yet. rainstorms are a piece of cake but strong winds are no joke. big swells are also ok but not the breaking waves and d confused seas. basically ur comfort level commensurate with one's skills and experience.
No need to kayak in the storm to get pissing scared of lightning. I've walked in a thunderstorm (on my way back from jogging in the park) and prayed all the way...the faster I walked, the more claps I get from heaven above, like it's cheering me home!
Agus, moral of the story? Don't go kayaking. I'd rather stay cosy at home. ;)

Agus, are you going to blog about your gathering? Still waiting...

wuching - si lor! jiap pah boh su chor mah!
May as well go in the rain, you're going to get wet one way or another. As long there is no danger of flash floods. "A rainy day kayaking is better than a sunny day at work" I always say.

Getting back in the kayak can be tricky, and I have to do it every time I go snorkeling. Easier with no shoes! I lunge straight across the kayak so I'm balanced on the middle - not comfortable - then turn over while swinging my legs in and sitting down all in one motion. Good thing to learn.
hehe...;)
panda - getting back on a sot (sit-on-top) is actually a whole lot easier compared to a sit-in kayak. then after u managed to get in, u've got these gallons upon endless gallons of water to pump out ... d joys of kayaking!

9lives - hehehe ... ;)

I notice that you often kayak in rivers and estuaries where crocodiles are commonly found. Case in point Rambungan - there are some huge crocs there and a major nesting site. I'm curious do you ever see crocodiles when you are kayaking? If so what do they do? And more to the point what do you do? When I go croc watching near Kuching I find that the crocs mostly swim away when the boat approaches, except for the huge ones which tend to hang around on the mud a bit longer before slowing moving into the river. Exciting to watch from the boat but what's it like when you are sitting in a kayak?
wayne - they nests in quite specific areas which I avoid if i'm kayaking with friends.

i keep my distance if i do sight them which is not very often and so far only small ones which are shy and because kayak moves quietly; u do 'surprise' 'em! i had not sighted one bigger than my kayak yet and i'm not particularly keen to do so either!

I've seen a few kayak-sized crocs in Buntal and Santubong but this is rare. One place is on the Buntal River near to where it joins the Santubong river. My boatman calls this area the "crocodile car park". Most are small but occassionaly you see a big one. There's also 3.5 metre chap that occasionally hangs out on the Santubong River on the mud bank opposite the marine police jetty. Docile fella, he just likes to sun bathe.
wayne - the crocs u mentioned r quite well known residents of the area and the locals have actually given 'em names!

say what, u seem comfortable with 'em - would u like to go kayak cro-watching with me one day? ;)

Yeah, I spend alot of time in those areas. I'm comfortable with the crocs, they don't disturb people if you dont disturb them. Kayaking with crocs eh? I'd need to be able to kayak without crocs first!
wayne - no problem; u can get into a double with me! ;) i'll give u basic instructions n u'll get the hang of it pretty quickly; u'll be surprised.

just don't make any sudden violent moves that's all when a big one approaches!

let me know! this is not an indefinite offer!
