Smoke Gets In Your Eyes

posted by FH2o

The other day after work as I was going to my car; I thought the weather has turned foggy which was very unusual. I rubbed my eyes to clear the cobwebs of staring onto the computer screens (I have 2 monitors) all day long; but the smoke was real.

I walked over to the riverbank as that’s where the smoke seems to be coming from and the few people who were also watching this informed me that one of the kampong houses has caught fire and the smell of kerosene seems to confirm it. If you live in a wooden hut by the river bank with no road access and when it catches fire; there is nothing really much you can do but to salvage what you can.

The smokes thicken as it blows over to where I was standing. And as I started to take photographs of the surreal atmosphere it dawned on me that I am appreciating this beautiful scene while some poor person’s house is burning to the ground! How detached can one get? I’d stopped watching TV news for a long time now with the endless cycle of negative images of violence and horrors that does nothing but numb our senses to feel anything. But I was not the only detached observer as there were a few anglers on the old jetty.

Look at these beautiful images and know that despite all the smokes in the world; it would not cloud our eyes to see the beauty that is all around us if we only have love in our heart. Lets keep this inner flame alive.

Written by Jerome Kern (music) and Otto Harbach (lyrics) for the musical "Roberta" in 1933
Recording by The Platters was a # 1 hit in 1959
Remade in 1973 by Blue Haze, it hit # 27

They, asked me how I knew,
My true love was true,
I of course replied, something here inside,
Can not be denied.

They, said some day you'll find,
All who love are blind,
When you heart's on fire, you must realize,
Smoke gets in your eyes.

So I chaffed them, and I gaily laughed,
To think they would doubt our love,
And yet today, my love has gone away,
I am without my love.

Now laughing friends deride,
Tears I cannot hide,
So I smile and say, when a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes,

Smoke gets in your eyes.

Oh I love the pictures of the jetty and the last tree. A perfect finishing touch.

Horrible event for the victim. If only the fog effect was natural.
Too bad about the house that burned, but the smoke did make a beautiful effect.

The smoke gives a great effect to these pics :)
the last photo is simply the BEST.
where is that place? what time it is when you took that photo?
TQ folks for your flattering comments!

These photos were taken at the end of Jalan Sungai Padugan (where my office is) by the river banks of Sg Sarawak at around 6.30pm using my Pentax Optio43WR 4.0Megapixels camera.

The best photo opportunities come at the most unexpected place and time. I just happened to be there to capture it.

Have a great weekend folks!
How nice if it's a morning mist! And I wonder what those people are doing on the jetty?

Yea I remember that song...but I prefer "Smoke on the water" (...fire in the sky...) :)))
Unker... actually not only best photo opportunities tha tcome at the most unexpected place and time but A LOT OF THINGS in our lives... *wink*

Have a nice weekend :)
Have a nice weekend, unker :)
Amazing how you were able to take someone else's tragedy and turn it into a beautiful work of art!
When I had the seminars in Riverside Majestic, I liked to look out and gaze at the river. That's the Sarawak River right?
That smog scene makes a good Stephen King Movie - he can write about Kayaking coupled with a horror story :) Pontianak Kayaking :)
I would have thought it's morning mist. Nice pictures especially the bottom one. Thanks for sharing though too bad about the house.
