Curry With a KICK!

by FH2o on April 4, 2006

Calling all curry lovers in Kuching! Your dreams had just been answered.

The Curry with a ‘KICK’ is in town and had just opened for business yesterday at the corner shophouse (Yam Seak Cafe) of Jalan Padungan and Jalan Song Thian Cheok. The stall operated by affable Jason Chew aka Roti is at the back of the shop. You can’t miss the big banner on the side wall of the shop house; and you shouldn’t miss the opening special for a limited time only which is one free order for every 3 orders! Besides serving the best curry in town, Jason also has Assam Fish as well for added kick! Jason also do special catering for private functions or parties.

Whether you like curry or assam or not; looking at the banners that Jason designed is sure to bring a smile to your face! Got real kick one!

Now go get your “kick”!

flaneur April 4, 2006 at 7:49 pm

where is this place relative to Chung Hin (number 59 (I think)) Padungan? Up-river direction, or down-river…

flaneur April 4, 2006 at 7:50 pm

that should be Chung Hin Hotel…. eating and typing

FH2O April 4, 2006 at 8:04 pm

flaneur - not sure where’s Chung Hin Hotel; but the place is more towards Tun Jugah Shopping Center but on the opposite side of the road. an old shophouse after Everise Supermarket.

Kong-Kay April 4, 2006 at 8:15 pm

advetising aside…… how’s the curry? got kick or not? don’t understand chinese… how to down 3 bowls of curry and expect to get one free? the place is next to hock ha, famous for the local siao-bee, or behind the famous too-car rice, opposite the red building called red chamber, ‘t’ junction of jalan padungan and jln song kheng hai…phew!!!

FH2O April 4, 2006 at 8:24 pm

kong-kay - thanks for the additional info on how to find the place. Flaneur would appreciate that.

the Curry is GREAT! ‘Got Kick’ or not - well the only way to find out is to go eat there! Ask 3 more friends to come along and 4 of you eat for the price of 3 only!

flaneur April 4, 2006 at 8:43 pm

I’ll find it… sounds like I’m eating a far broader variety of food in Kuching this time than last, though I certainly wouldn’t say my eating experiences were limited then either…

just the horror on the server’s face in a place in Sibu when I looked to the other side of the restaurant, and asked for pork… I’ll leave her reaction to your imagination. And I have a beard, look like a member of the Saud family, minus the money.

FH2O April 4, 2006 at 9:00 pm

flaneur - we could do better than that; lets go there together! I need to take lunch too.

u just need the robe and u’ll pass for a taliban! ;)

flaneur April 4, 2006 at 11:18 pm

Taliban eh? I don’t think I have the vaguest chance of ever being mistaken for a member of that enlightened group of exemplary individuals; much to their chagrin I pass as Jewish in New York, while in Sarawak (and Singapore) many thought I was Muslim. In both cases an affront to either faith I’m afraid.

But I would truly appreciate the opportunity to discuss life, architecture, kayaking over good food, with good company while in Kuching.

Laksa April 4, 2006 at 11:34 pm

aaah, now you’re talking - hot and spicy, just the way i like it :) and so near my office summore!

Selba - one more ‘must-do’ when you’re in Kuching!

Pandabonium April 5, 2006 at 4:24 am

shouldn’t the word “Kick” be printed on the back of the shirt? heehee

FH2O April 5, 2006 at 4:56 am

panda - yes … only if the curry or assam is no good!

but in Jason’s case it’s two thumbs up! ;)

The Moody Minstrel April 5, 2006 at 5:06 am

Ooh…spicy enough to make my eyes and nose tingle just looking at the picture…

I love curry!

Robin April 5, 2006 at 5:19 am

Roti’s curry really got the kick, especially after kayaking in cold water down the river..

Thanks again …

Pandabonium April 5, 2006 at 5:19 am

Ah well, my opinion of curry was best expressed in a Sherlock Holmes movie starring Basil Rathbone. Watson said, “we were just discussing curry” and Holmes said, “oh, yes, terrible stuff.”

Coincidently, we just had a curry vegetable stew for dinner. Couldn’t taste a thing. Sigh.

Poison April 5, 2006 at 5:56 am

ooohhh…. so what’s the verdict? Are they really good? (would love to give it a try when back in town)

FH2O April 5, 2006 at 7:12 am

poison - contact me when you’re back in Kuching and we can go kayaking n currying! heehee ;)

panda - i guessed durians are out of the question as well??

Pandabonium April 5, 2006 at 7:20 am

Never tried a durian. Would like to, just to see. Never know unless we try.

No offense meant about curry. Just not my thing.

Best wishes for Roti’s new business. I’m sure he’ll bring his curry loving customers meals that can’t be beat.

Chen April 5, 2006 at 8:27 am

after u eat the curry, u got “kick” anyone or not ? kekeke…
kick someone to show the curry really got “kick” mah..

FH2O April 5, 2006 at 8:28 pm

panda - there are many types of curry. actually d ones in japan are very very mild by comparison! Insipid as they say!
Durians are definitely not for the uninitiated! :)

chen - i would never have imagined that d doc can be this naughty or violent! ;)

robin April 6, 2006 at 12:26 am

I am getting hungry already !! Cant find good curry here in perth

roti April 6, 2006 at 3:28 am

HI all….wow wow and wow…hope my curry had “wow” those who have tasted it!! unker’s blog must be the most connected blog around..!!!! my 2nd day kari and today’s asam sold out!!!…”clear until dry dry” ha ha ha…thank you all of u for the support and encouragement!!!

FH2O April 6, 2006 at 5:07 am

roti - your curry is one of the best I’d tasted and believe me I’d tasted a lot!

The thing now is to maintain a consistently high standard of the best tasting curry in town with a KICK!

Keep this up for the sake of curry lovers in Kuching! We’re counting on you kiddo! :)

The Moody Minstrel April 6, 2006 at 9:07 am

Hmm…how much does it cost to travel from Japan to Kuching? Is the curry worth the price?

Roti’s lucky to have Unker’s plug - the best advertising available (except for Happy’s or Panda’s, maybe)

Panda - If you don’t like spicy curry, try a mild masala curry. It may change your mind.

roti April 6, 2006 at 12:40 pm

Hi there!

I’d like to congratulate Jason @ roti for his vision and entrepreneurship in turning what we have taken for granted (Mum’s curry) into a great business model. Good job, Chuan.

And to Unker, although we haven’t met, I’ve heard so much about you and read your blog since roti introduced it to me… and many thanks for you support and encouragement to You Kick!

In case you’re still wondering who am I??? Well, I’m roti’s elder brother living and working in Singapore and I love painting watercolours.

Cheers….

FH2O April 8, 2006 at 4:30 am

watercolourdude - *Ahem* .. the name is FH2o but affectionately (i hope) called by the “still teething” (or wet behind the ears) as “Unker”. Kuching Kids very the respectful one! ;)

Anyway, I’m more than happy to be plugging for roti as any young entrepreneur with vision n courage commands my respect. Plus roti is such a positive, sincere and cheerful dude! How not to like him? :)

I LOVE watercolours and would be checking on your site!

FH2O April 8, 2006 at 8:47 am

Marvin! I had checked your website. You are very talented! wow! :)

watercolourdude April 8, 2006 at 10:14 am

Hey thanks! the artistic gene runs in the family… roti used to love painting too but I guess his culinary skill is much sought after now… ;-)

fh2o..I’d love to join your kayaking trip one day when I go back to Kuching. I’m sure it will be very fun. Combining the two elements of H20 (kayaking and watercolouring) should be quite inspiring to me as an artist!!

roti April 8, 2006 at 5:01 pm

fh2o, meet my brother..marvin chew. Will certainly let u know when he’s back so the two talented guys can bring kayaking n watercolour to new ground…”ahem…water..not ground”,..:)

FH2O April 10, 2006 at 5:03 am
