Kayaking With Dolphins!

posted by FH2o

This has got to me one of my most exciting and amazing kayaking experiences yet! And I’m still ‘reeling’ from our most amazing encounters this morning with the Irrawaddy Dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris), a species of dolphin found near coasts and in estuaries in parts of south-east Asia and in this instance; the coastal waters of Kuching!. I’m still feeling so high I may need some valium to calm down!

A while back this angmoh stranger emailed me about crocodiles as he had been on the same rivers that I had kayaked and wanted to compare notes on our experiences with these reptiles. Then he sprang a surprise on me by asking whether I would want to try kayaking with dolphins instead of the crocs! I nearly fell out of my chair as this is like asking if I want to go on a date with Angelina Jolie or Jessica Alba! Would I! And so we met up to talk further and to get to each other a little bit better; and we agreed to do it on a public holiday if the weather is fine. Turned out that Wayne, a long time expatriate here, is passionate about the Irrawaddy Dolphins and had been an avid 'dolphin watcher' since his first sighting of them in a river estuary in Kuching. He has also recently had an article published in the "Malaysian Naturalist Magazine" (Vol. 59/3 2006) of the Malaysian Nature Society. I also told Wayne that I’ll be bringing along one or two friends.

So I invited skeptical Kenny along ("there are freaking dolphins in Kuching? C’mon!!") and Joe, who unfortunately couldn’t make it due to ‘visa’ problems! (Go kick yourself Joe!) As luck would have it for Peggy (from the Bronx) from WCS; she called me the evening before just then when we have a vacancy for one more person.

It was a bright sunny day with calm seas when we set off from the muddy beach with Wayne and me on my new double kayak – the Perception Surge; and Kenny and Peggy on single kayaks. Wayne suggested that we paddle out towards the bay where the local fishermen were and asked them if they had spotted any dolphins about. We did and one of them told us that they were – out at sea.

Not wanting to venture that far out, we thought we’ll go and check out the cows we spotted on the beach on the other side of the river. Well if no dolphins, we’ll settle for cows then! Just as we were setting out for the beach, we heard excited cries from eagle-eye Peggy that she saw something out there. I looked at where she pointed and I saw the dolphins in the distance! Wayne was equally excited and said that it was a school pod of maybe 2 or 3 as we paddled towards them with him warning me not cut into their path; not that I could paddle as fast as a dolphin! The dolphins were headed back down the river from the seas. As we got nearer we stopped paddling so as not to disturb them. The sight and sounds (when they break the water surface for air) is something that has to be experienced and it’s indescribable! To say that Wayne and I were excited would be an understatement as we spotted schools pods of dolphins not just in front but suddenly from our sides and right behind us too! They seemed to be 'popping' up from everywhere from out of the blue! Wayne was almost besides himself with joy and delight and I was one ecstatic kayaker as these grey gentle mammals swam all around us! I gently ‘spinned’ the kayak 360 degrees to take in this most amazing sight!

Since he has a telephoto lens, I left it for Wayne to take the photographs while I paddled and maneuvered the kayak to get the best vantage shots for him. Hence I did not have that many good shots of the dolphins. We trust that Wayne’s shots will turn out well.

I could also see that Kenny was in a good position to take some good shots; so go over to his site for his inimitable take on our kayaking adventure this morning (when and if he gets round to it I suppose; did I mention that he had a 'challenging' time? heehee)!

The amazing experience of seeing and hearing 2.1 meters long mammals in the wild is just unbelievable! Am I thrilled to bits today? You can bet your little sunburnt tootsies that I am!

Lucky you! There is something magic about coming 'face to face' with marine kin. remind me when I'm there, I'll show you the result of my own encounter
flaneur - please do; I'll certainly remind you!
Very exciting! The second picture is not showing up though. Am wondering if it's just my PC.
Wow! Dolphins... kenot, I must learn to swim already... look at all those stuff I am missing... wahh :'(
happy - fine here! u may need to check your PC or your eyes! heehee ;)

miracle8 - YES! Learn to swim and stop missing out on one of the GREAT things in life - Kayaking With Dolphins! :) It is totally AMAZING! I'm still feeling 'high' right now! :)
An experience NOT to be MISSED!!! And it's right here in KUCHING!!! What are you folks all waiting for? ;)
FH2o, thanks. Second batch of pix showing up now. Wish you have more close-up shots of the dolphins.
happy - I wished that too but we were keeping a 'respectful' distance from the dolphins. These are wild, protected and elusive mammals remember?
I was do the kayaking so that Wayne can concentrate on getting better shots.
Don't worry - I'll be back and one of these days I'm gonna get some really 'killer shots'. But photographing any animals in the wild is challenging! Really challenging and we're out on the open waters in small crafts! I had a BLAST yesterday! :)
wah! dolphins! just make sure its not sharks!

Very nice adventure and there seems almost a purpose now to head out to the open sea. But I would go with a real boat, not a lump of plastic.

Never for a minute did I imagine there would be dolphin in the tropical water. It’s a very pleasant surprise. Don’t they follow sardine?

Jungleman
Jungleman - a kayak is in every sense of the word a "REAL BOAT". It has a long history and proud heritage. And an expedition sea kayak is arguably the most sea-worthy watercraft there is.

Kayaking on its own is justification enough and needs no other 'purpose', rhyme or reasons! This is just icing on an already very delicious cake! ;)

The irrawaddy dophins are intelligent mammals and frequently trails the fishing boats/trawlers looking for easy scraps thrown away by the fishermen.
This is amazing and I find you to be truly an amazing person FH2o! Your blog is a gem. Thank you for sharing your kayaking adventures with us!
Amazing! I went to wayne's site and now I know dolphins swim in Sarawak. Someone laughed at the idea but now there's proof. I sure hope you have regular encounters in your next trips and get killer shos while you're at it. Another attraction for your kayaking tours.

probably u can add another "tour" to ur kuching kayaking adventures. kayaking with dolphins... $(fill in the blanks)

i think the correct term for a group of dolphins is pod.
Wow! I'm amazed!
mak - TQ. You're most welcomed!

agus - Yes! If I'd not seen 'em with my own eyes I would not have believed it myself.
Tour? Hmmm I'm not so sure yet until I understand more on what impact it might have on these wonderful mammals.

mangrooveDan - actually I was wondering if 'schools' was correct or not. Thanks for the correction! Appreciate that! ;)

the yongs - God's creations are always amazing!
I'd posted some facts on the Irrawaddy Dolphins below. They are truly amazing creatures and to experience them in the wild is truly a blessing and rare priviledge. I feel very grateful for the experience. It's awesome to hear the sounds of 'em blowing out air so close by! I really look forward to my next trip to see them but I'll continue to maintain my distance so as not to disturb these elusive amaZing mammals. No close-up shots for a while yet I think. This is not the zoo afterall! ;)

Kuching got dolphin meh ?????
hard to believe... ahahaa..
the first dolphin i saw was in the swan river here in perth, wehn i went on the river cruise 2 years back. The sight was pretty amazing..
I've always been a dolphin lover, but this still reminds of of an incident that happened a few years ago.

A tour group in Southern California was offering trips out to swim with dolphins in the sea. They claimed that dolphins had "proven healing powers", so swimming with them was not only exciting but also therapeutic. Apparently it became quite popular.

Then one of the dolphins attacked and injured a swimmer. That pretty much killed that idea.

Hmm...maybe we should try swimming with wild orcas next!
That's fantastic FH2O! This experience will stay with you a long time I'm sure. To have such knowledgable company must have been a big plus too. I am turning green with envy.

In Maui waters we have Spinner dolphins, but I've never been lucky enough to get close. In Fiji I've only seen dolphins from the beach as they fished just outside the surf line.

Your pictures are beautiful as always.

Hi, I have been reading your blog since Jan. I am from Kuching but living somewhere else. You have kept me close to home and brought me good memories. Hearing dolphin in Kuching is great and for the Minor Morris, I think it belongs to my primary schoolmate father who lived in Padungan. They lived in a shophouse there and used to make noodle for a living. As for Kayak, I hope to do it together with my children one day.
WOW! Like everyone else, I thought "Kuching got dolphins meh?"

FANTASTIC!!! What an amazing experience you had!! How I wish I'm back in Kuching right now!

Btw, I've set up my own blog on watercolours and stuff but I doubt I have the time to update it as frequently as you do here.

anonymous - thks for visiting. they're still makin noodles there which are frequently laid to dry out in the sun - sometimes on top of the morris! :)

watercolourdude - so now you've got two websites as well!
the dolphins are really mind boggling! :)
Omigawd! We have dolphins??!!! You must must take me there when I'm back in town. :) Lucky lucky dawg you!
