Canoeing the Root River, Minnesota

George Then is from Kuching but now resides in Minnesota and visits my blog' which he chanced upon, whenever he misses Kuching. Reading that I cannot find cam straps in Kuching, he kindly offered to buy and bring them back for me when he comes back to Kuching for a visit towards the end of July. He also sent me a photo of his weekend canoeing trip on the Root River and with his permission I'm sharing it here together with some information on this nice river. Thank you George for your kindness and sharing this with us. I look forward to meeting up with you soon.The Root River is a class 1 'beginner's' stream located in southeastern Minnesota. It cuts into an ancient limestone topography and its banks are lined with black walnut, witch hazel, and thick undergrowth of stinging nettle. It is a good route for bird watching and it's quite easy to spot herons and kingfishers as you paddle along. This river feeds into the mighty Mississippi and is well known for trout fishing.We put down our canoe in the small country town of Lanesboro in southeast Minnesota, about 50 miles from Rochester.

fh2o, that photo looks familiar. It was actually posted on our family website a few days ago! It's a small world. You see, George Then is my cousin and is working in Rochester, MN. He is due back in Kuching for a short holiday on the 21/7. My brother, Martin (who lives next door to us in Melbourne) will also be on holidays in Kuching at the same time. I was talking to him last night about the kayaking in Borneo Highlands. If they are interested, I will try and organise a trip for them with you when they're in town.

This brings back wonderful memories of canoeing on the Snake River in Minnesota when I was about 13 years old. I was going to a summer camp in that area and we paddled until midnight before making camp. It was great. No crocos selba.

A very nice picture. I like the greenness of it. Somehow the place looks greener than the wild in Kuching, not that it's a bad thing. Probably vegetation is denser there. Nice.
