We went Kayaking and Saw Orang Utans …

by FH2o on August 14, 2006

We went kayaking at Borneo Highlands on Saturday and on the way down to Kuching we stopped by the Semengoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Center to see the orang utans there. Gotcha! What were you thinking huh? Heehee.

Semengoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Center which is about 40 minutes drive from town is a 740 acres sanctuary for a number of Sawarak’s indigenous wildlife including the orginial “Borneo Man Of The Forest” - the unique and gentle Orang Utans which are the star attraction amongst the other wild animals there including bears, monkeys and hornbills. Most of the animals here have been taken from captivity and are slowly rehabilitated in order to return them to their natural habitat. The rehabilitated animals roam freely in the rain forest, and the orang utans often return to the centre at feeding times which is where visitors can get a chance to see them. And we were there at 3 pm and managed to see one adult!

A word of advice: it would be easier on your feet if you wear more comfortable shoes while walking through the rainforest! Would it be too long before I see our guest(s) wearing one of these for kayaking? Hmmm

What a beautiful sight. This is eco-tourism at its best.

Unfortunately the bush fire and haze are anti eco-tourism.
