Red Durians! (D Dulcis)

posted by FH2o

You have seen pink bananas here but have you ever heard of or seen red durians? Not me until today when Selba, who in keeping with the 'practice' of email forwarders, emailed me this photograph of red durians apparently from Sabah, without any other information.

I trust that they are edible unlike the pink bananas as I can imagine that they are akin to fine red wine! Bon aperitif!

Yes they are from Sabah and they are edible as I found out from here:- "The ‘king of fruits’, the durian, flourishes in Sabah, which has 15 wild varieties. One unique variety has red flesh, and lacks the distinctive fragrance of the durian. This red durian is – sacrilege to durian lovers elsewhere- fried with onions and chilli and served as a side dish or sambal."

You call Kuching/Sarawak home and you dont even know such common thing as a 'wild jungle durian'.....
wilson - see the additional info i posted. its real lah! so no need to photoshop! :)

anonymous - obviously not and that includes wilson and plenty of others. fyi they are found only in sabah not sarawak! u're smart hor?
got orange coloured ones too
The red durians remind me of the orange and yellow coloured jungle durian in Sarawak.
I miss those orange & yellow coloured jungle durians...
Haven't eat that for years.

I have read about the red durians but never see the photos in the past.
I would definitely love to taste it if I have the chance :)
I wonder how they taste like?
i've seen them before..in sibu! they call it wild durians, dunno if thats true
they put dye?
No dye lah. They are naturally coloured - the beauty of nature? Some species are as orange as the evening sun. Kipling comes to mind. Sorry, I couldn't help it.
Isn't that buah Pakan? a type of wild durians, you can ask your friends if the thorns are hard or soft? Normal durians, u need a blade or something sharp to open, but Pakan can be opened just by stepping on it and the thorns are usually soft.

I prefer pakan to durian anytime :P
