There’s “People Power” of sort at work at the small rural town of Maleny in Southeast Queensland. They even have a site called “Maleny Voice” to collate and disseminate information for and on behalf of the Maleny community.
I really like this! To the community of people of Maleny; you have my support. It’s about time that a community stand up to what they firmly believe to preserve the character of their town and not to be bullied into otherwise.

What a coincidence! I was in Maleny last year during my visit to our new sister school. I wrote about it in my own blog. When I was there construction on the Woolworth’s was on temporary hold because they’d found a platypus nest on the site. Since the platypus is protected, that meant everything had to wait until they figured out what to do about it.
When I was there again last summer I was told that the platypus nest had mysteriously vanished, and construction had resumed. So had the protest campaigns.

I loved the statement “they were prepared to go 8 years at a loss, and we’re prepared to help them along”. Good on those people for resisting. So many communities have had their small local business base destroyed in the USA and other countries by the “big box” stores. Time to say “no more”.

Well i live in Maleny and the only people protesting were the hippies with no jobs no life and want no progress for the town and only think of themselves. I myself have also seen many woolworths protesters who now shop there instead of the IGA so whats going on there might i ask you protest against it but now that its there you want the lower price food?????
