Decked Trucks

by FH2o on November 27, 2006

Lou saw my post yesterday on our efficient asian way of transporting trucks and sent me these pics of how the ‘kiasi angmohs’ do it in North America.

How does Lou know? Well, he has actually driven setups like this from Vancouver to Calgary a journey of over 1,200 kilometres through the Rocky Mountains!

And I got this from Trucking News :-

Looking at these one-of-a-kind loads, one might imagine they are as quirky to handle as their appearance suggests. They are. Decking operations have all sorts of quirks. Take the name, for example. Decking is the proper term, despite the use of the widespread misnomer, piggybacking (which is an entirely different operation).

Why a load of trucks being dragged on their rear axles, without the use of any trailer, or other conveyance with a deck, is called decking, remains unclear.

Cost is a factor; there is also a tendency, now thankfully diminished, for new units (trucks) to break down - so you change out the drive unit for another, continuing on your way. The lower cost for the ‘owners’ is reflected in the pay received by the delivery drivers, also known as transfer, or shuttle, operators
