Adventures On Sungai Abang 1 : Part 1 – Excitement & Anticipation

posted by FH2o

For a while now I had been curious about the upper reaches of the river where we normally put-in at Bengoh, Borneo Highlands for our rainforest kayaking trip and so we had been scouting around Kg Bayor where Sungai Abang 1 meanders through and also waiting for a day when we are not taking people out. And so on the Saturday morning of the 23rd December, Azmi, Kelvin and myself set out to explore the friendly sounding Sg. Abang 1. ‘Abang’ in the malay language means ‘brother’ and we're already feeling a brotherly bond with it when we set our eyes on it for the 'first' time ...

S
g Abang 1 is somewhere down there, tempting us as we approach him ('Abang' remember?) with great excitment and anticipation.

But first we have to bring our kayaks down from the track up above and down a steep incline. That’s Azmi and Kelvin with the kayak while I’m carrying the heavy camera and paddles … *ahem*

We brought along two kayaks (one double and one single) since there were three of us. You can’t see Azmi in this picture below as he’s carrying the bow of the kayak over his head. He’s also short as well; compared to me anyway (as most people are, angmohs included).

Finally we got the kayaks and our gear down and we eagerly get ready to set out!

We got on the waters, went past under a rickety old bridge and we entered another realm ...

We heard noises and as we round the bend we saw some children whom we thought were smoking as we saw smoke but were instead playing with fire crackers! Its funny how the playing of fire crackers normally associated with Chinese New Year is now ‘adopted’ by other races celebrating all festivals!

We carried on with Kelvin who’s on a short single trailing behind us. Once in a while I need to remind Azmi (who incidentally is Sarawak racing kayaking champion) on the double with me to slow down.

Before long we sighted Aman No.1 bridge ahead. ‘Aman’ means peace in malay. There are a total of 7 bridges on the way to Anah Rais and Borneo Heights. The construction of the bridge left over concrete rocks and other debris on the river bed and created a rather 'unnatural' rapid.

Kelvin successfully going through the rapids and happily taking photos of us after that.

This dead small tree has fallen across the river creating an obstruction hazard so we decided to clear it.

But little do we know that more obstructions await us along the way! And this time it was bamboos – but we haven’t seen bamboos yet! More on this later ...

Though pretty to look at, bamboo can be a real hazard on the waters if one is not careful. The least of which is that you can get 'whipped' by the small overhanging ones as the water pushes your kayak through them or at the worst you can get yourself impaled by the larger jutting ones that may had snapped off. Nasty! As you can understand now, we have a lot of respect for the bamboos!

As I said, bamboos are really pretty and so I took a few snaps before we pushed off again.

We heard loud water sounds ahead and were delighted to come across this waterfall on the left side of the river. On closer examination it looked like it was an unintended consequence of some sort of construction works high above. But like all waterfalls, it sure looks pretty!

End of Part 1. Adventures to be continued ... (when the author gets over the holiday seasons lethargy)

merry christmas unker ho!
fh2o, count me in on this adventure the next time I am in town!

btw, I have just bought my 2nd kayak last week and am thinking of a 3rd - a sea kayak this time!
wah! 2 greetings from Melbourne!

wuching - thanks and happy holidays to you!

batukawa - you may want to read Part 2 of the story first when I post it before you decide!
Congratulations on your 2nd kayak! I hope Agnes doesn't think I'm a bad influence! If you're thinking of a seakayak; you may want to consider a Feathercraft Folding Kayak (www.feathercraft.com) which you can bring along when you travel! A Big Kahuna from them maybe suitable for you! The Folbot Yukon is a cheaper alternative. (www.folbot.com)
