Bubuk Season in Miri
posted by FH2o

It's the bubuk or shrimps season in Miri and when we were at Piasau Beach we bought a bagful of them and head off to the nearest coffeeshop/restaurant who would be amendable to make shrimps pancake fritters for us!

Fortunately we did even though the results was not entirely what we had in mind - we wanted more shrimps instead of the batter. But it was still delicious nontheless! The excess bubuk that are not eaten or sold off are made into belacan and cincalo.
It's a pity that we do not have the bubuk season here in Kuching. The people in Bintulu and Miri are so lucky in more ways than one. Both Bintulu and Miri towns are along the coastline with beautiful beaches at their doorsteps. There must be kayakers there as well (and I would sure love to meet 'em) ... hmmm

Post a CommentWe do get bubuk in Kuching. Ya just need to know where to look lah! On Sunday at Buntal I watched the fishermen bringing in tiny shrimp by the drum load at the jetty in the harbour. The shrimp looked exactly the same as the ones in your Miri pic. On Monday at Bako there was a whole fleet of fishing craft catching tiny shrimp off Telok Paku. Must have been 40 boats in all. As far as I know most of the shrimp caught near Kuching is used for balacan. Maybe they catch more in Bintulu and Miri so it is also sold in the market as well being used for balacan.
Follow up to my previous comment. I just looked at my pics of the tiny shrimp caught at Buntal. They are a slightly different colour from those you photographed in Miri. The ones at Buntal were a whitish pink colour. Maybe they are a different species. Any fishery scientists out there know?
Thanks for the info pesut!

Hey, Nung! You here too?
I want some bubuk fritters! Wawaaahh!
My mother is an expert belacan maker and since she and my father are too old to catch their own bubuk now, they buy it from the market. She told me that so far she has made abt 30-40 kg of belacan from this season alone.
I left Miri with a kg worth of belacan from the previous bubuk season.
