Kuching Mountain Biking

Bikers Ah Huat & Mike Lim meets Kayaker FH2o on a Sunday morning at Rambungan.

Ian Chung found out from my blog that I bought a new mountain bike and being a mountain biking enthusiast, promptly invited me to go mountain biking with him this morning. I suspected that Ian wants to ‘torture’ me but he reassured me that we’re going take it easy as after all if Mike Lim at 59 can take it so should I. But then again Mike is not your typical 59 years old - he’s fitter than your average 25 year old!

Ian assures me that this is an “easy” wide open trail … yeah sure with all that sticky muck, ruts and hills. *sigh*

We met up at a coffee shop in Green Road at 6.15am; or rather Ian made me waited there at that time. Ah Huat showed up shortly and after we’ve had our “kolo-mee” we proceeded to Rambungan stopping near the ferry point. We unloaded our bikes and with Ian and Ah Huat leading the way we turned off the sealed tarmac onto one of the disused and probably illegal logging trails. It had been raining the night before and the trail was muddy and sticky.

Piece of cake, Ian says. I think he meant mud cakes!

I struggled to keep up with them trailing far behind; and the hills and tough pedaling soon took its toll on me and I had to take a long break when I started seeing “oo-pek” (black and white in hokkien). Due to my ‘condition’ they (mercifully) decided to cut short the off-road biking bit and instead we decided to cycle to the Rambungan Jetty about 5Kms away, after I had recovered.

FH2o’s a fish out of the water on a muddy dirt track.

The fresh sea breeze at Rambungan was invigorating and we decided to cycle to the beach another few kilometers away; after which we cycled back to the ferry point and back to our cars for the journey back to Kuching in time for lunch.

Rambungan beach. With rough seas like this, I’m glad to be on land.

Would I go mountain biking again? You can bet on it! And if you’re in Kuching; don’t hesitate to contact us for a ride! Don’t worry - if unker can do it; so can you!

A great Sunday morning on the ferry @ Rambungan.

Chinese New Year Laze

by FH2o on February 9, 2008

cnyrathead.jpgI went CNY visiting yesterday afternoon and cycling at night (around 10.30pm) to work off the calories and was chased by a pack of stray dogs at Sama Jaya Industrial Estate. I never realize that I could cycle that fast! Rats!

It was raining this morning, so I stayed home and spent sometime tweaking my Kuching Kayak website - which I have been meaning to do since I updated it this year. I am worried about design usability issues and eagerly awaiting comments/feedback with regards to the revamped site.

Anyway I have 2 upcoming trips soon - one of which I hope I don’t have to make and another that I would dearly love to go on! We’ll see how it goes. Meanwhile I’m kicking back and enjoying the Chinese New Year laze!

Double Happiness

I’m fascinated by identical twins and so when 15 year olds Ping and Ting visited us yesterday on the first day of the Chinese New Year with their cousins for the first time, I took advantage of this ‘auspicious’ photo opportunity of ‘double happiness’ for this Lunar Year of the Rat.

*Note: BTW Ping is on my left and Ting on my right. Can you tell them apart?

Chinese New Year Surprise

by FH2o on February 7, 2008

Not expecting to see snow and ice here right?

It’s an early Thursday Chinese New Year morning and everyone’s asleep but I awoke as I normally do with the break of light. I love the quietness and stillness of the morning which I observe on the river as I sit on my sofa of my living room slowly sipping hot freshly brewed coffee and listening to the chirpings of the birds outside. I love these peaceful meditations.

I hardly read the newspapers nor watch TV and I’m not missing anything preferring magazines and news services I subscribed to on the net. I checked my email and was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from Liza and Lars who lived in Kg Semadang but are currently in Oslo, Norway. This is part of what they wrote - “We got in contact with Marissa, a girl from west malaysia who got our mail add. from you. Also saw your blogg ………………cool. We’re sending a few pictures and Marissa is the girl to the left in the pic with 4 asian girls. As you can see, it’s freezing cold here, but we love skiing in the forrest.”

About one month ago, Marissa wrote to me after stumbling on my blog looking to get in touch with her old friends Liza and Lars whom she has lost contact. Marissa who’s from KL but now living in Norway saw the photos I took of Lars and was certain that it looked like him. Anyway they managed to contact each other and I’m glad that through my blog they managed to get in touch again in the true tradition of reunion that is the spirit of the Chinese New Year. And talking about surprises - I bet Marissa, Liza and Lars would be surprise with this post!

Many Hands Make Light Work

by FH2o on February 6, 2008

My other half prefers to bake her own cookies for Chinese New Year and I prefer it this way too as her cookies are simply the best, this side of the South China Sea. Anyway she was on to her last batch to finish last night and we all wanted to go out to do some last minute shopping and so we all chipped in to give her a hand. I did too of course after I have taken these snaps.

It’s Chinese New Year tomorrow; so here’s wishing everyone a delicious and bountiful Lunar Year ahead!
