The ‘REN’ building in Shanghai

Ren building in Shanghai

Chinese character for humanWhile I’m on the topics of outrageous buildings in China; here’s another spectacular one that is being proposed for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

I think the design doctrine these days is to do it “just because I can!”. That’s the way it is for cheap thrills and ‘up yours’ mentality! Same as the egoistical attitude of some bullying senior executive who try to cover up their incompetence and insecurities by finding faults with others while avoiding making the hard decisions.*sigh*

Here’s the description and the images of this striking design in the form or a human character in this inhumane world.

Ren building in Shanghai

The REN Building is a proposal for a hotel, sports and conference center for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. The building is conceived as two buildings merging into one. The first building, emerging from the water, is devoted to the activities of the body, and houses the sports and water culture center.

The second building emerging from land, is devoted to the spirit and enlightment, and houses the conference center and meeting facilities.

The two buildings meet in a 1000 room hotel, a building for living.

The building becomes the Chinese sign for ‘The People’, and a recognizable landmark for the World Expo in China.

REN building in Shanghai - a symbol of human or the dominance of human over this planet or the inhumane nature of man?

Looks like a pair of pants full of holes. Yes, this is pure cheap thrills just like a lot structure in asia. If they do it as a pure vertical or horizontal slab it could be quite elegant .

Ah, the humanity!

If you look at it from the wrong side, does it mean “to enter”?
