Adventures & Photography of a Kuching Kayaker & His Wet Life
I’d been feeling really lethargic for the past few weeks and the light workout at the gym after work didn’t really help that much. But the sight of this really nice evening rainbow as I walked to my car really helped lift my spirits.
So did the really nice Robin Wong who mentioned ‘unker’ in his post on Kuching back in May (but which I’d only just noticed! Oops!) accompanied by some really great photos which amongst lots of other nice things is a hallmark of his blog.
I’m never too sleepy or lazy to notice interesting cloud formations - and an uncanny knack in doing so!
It’s not for a lack of ideas or things to blog about; quite to the contrary. It’s just that whenever I find the time or inclination to sit down in front of my notebook, I feel incredibly lazy drowsy! *sigh*
On account of my lethargic state, I’m not inclined to think of a clever caption for the above strange clouds that I snapped. Any suggestions anyone? *yawn* Thanks!

I’d been quite busy both night and day to have the luxury to be lethargic for the past few days. Blogging’s also starting to be a luxury as well! Too many things to blog about but not enough time to do so. *sigh*
Life gets in the way lah!
Anyway here are two snaps of KL’s iconic Petronas Twin Towers taken from my hotel room which I kind of like, as it’s challenging to take interesting photos of well known landmarks. Not bad huh? And proof enough that each day begins anew and that beauty can be found both night and day and from all angles.

Early morning @ Tasik Kenyir, 17th May 2008
A sight to behold and keep in our mind’s eye on our first day on the waters.
I’m inundated by work and as I would in most probability be making another overseas trip on Monday; I would be working over this weekend as well. So it would seem that my photos and stories on Tasik Kenyir would be put on hold somewhat. *sigh*
Geoff Foote paddles past the remains of a flooded landscape.
Meanwhile here are few snaps of Tasik Kenyir to tie things over until I find the time to ‘properly’ blog about our trip. Sorry Huey!

Blues only in the sky with no upgrading blues this time round - phew!
Here we go again! WordPress is now at version 2.5.1… And of course I HAVE to upgrade in view of the image uploads problems that I have been having. Check the details here and since it’s so easy to select, copy and paste; here is it as well:-
Version 2.5.1 of WordPress is now available. It includes a number of bug fixes, performance enhancements, and one very important security fix. We recommend everyone update immediately, particularly if your blog has open registration. The vulnerability is not public but it will be shortly.
In addition to the security fix, 2.5.1 contains many bug fixes. If you are interested only in the security fixes, you can download these corrected copies of wp-includes/pluggable.php, wp-admin/includes/media.php, and wp-admin/media.php. Replace your existing copies of these files with these new copies.
If you download the entire 2.5.1 release, you will be getting over 70 other fixes. 2.5.1 focuses on fixing the most annoying bugs and improving performance. Here are some highlights:
- Performance improvements for the Dashboard, Write Post, and Edit Comments pages.
- Better performance for those who have many categories
- Media Uploader fixes
- An upgrade to TinyMCE 3.0.7
- Widget Administration fixes
- Various usability improvements
- Layout fixes for IE

Go ahead and download and upgrade to WordPress 2.5.1 and experience the dashboard interface which is as cool, slick and beautiful as an evening Kuching sky - well almost.
Hallelujah! Finally I can upload my photos after mucking around without success with the chmod, htaccess file, swfuploads, turning off plug-ins, upgrading of PHP, Adobe flash upgrade, etc and all the various suggestions in WordPress forums … I was not alone in this with the common sentiment that this is “incredibly frustrating” …
In the end it turned out that if I put the full URL path name to the files for upload (in Settings >Miscellaneous) and leaving the “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” option unchecked that did the trick … *sigh* And I finally get to go to bed at around 1.30 am.
Would I still install the latest updates/upgrades the next time round? You bet I would as the fear or inclination not to try new and challenging stuff(s) and a refusal to accept changes is certainly a sure way to become dull and OLD (and there are heaps aplenty of ‘old’ young people around!). Bring ‘em on! Yeah. But not so soon please OK!
KUCHING KAYAK - where the adventure begins …
Upgrade to WordPress 2.5 - where your woes with uploading photos begins … *sigh*
No doubt inspired by Folbot’s newly redesigned website, I also set about to work on Kuching Kayak’s website yesterday and I’m quite pleased with it. Please check it out and let me have your feedback. But I am no less pleased at all that I’m still unable to upload my photos to this blog after upgrading to WordPress 2.5 and I am so glad that I did NOT upgrade Kuching Kayak’s website and which is why I am still able to upload the above image. I have started reading the forums for help and it would seem that this is a major problem that has no clear solution yet - so if you are using WordPress 2.3; please do NOT upgrade to 2.5. I am seriously contemplating switching back to 2.3 even though I hate going backwards … *sigh*
Last week I posted about this ridiculous situation where we have this small hongkie group who does not want to go kayaking on a rainforest kayaking trip!
And it gets even more ridiculous today with this group of 10 from Royal Brunei Airlines Hong Kong & Southern China Agents (and again arranged arranged by STB) who on arrival at the put-in at Bengoh decided to sit it out in their air-conditioned coach leaving Azmi, Max and Bev who were ready to guide them with the kayaks and gears ready, dumbfounded and more than a little perplexed at these superficial tour agents. Next time STB should just send these sort people shopping, karaoke and for hanky-panky massages instead or not bloody entertain them at all. What a waste of time and money. *sigh*
This post is still ridiculously bare naked without any photos as despite my best efforts at changing the folder’s permission(s), creating new folders with 777 permissions and re-installation of WordPress; I am still unable to upload any photos. I still get this darn confounded error message - “Unable to create directory /public_html/fh2o/wp-content/uploads/2008/04. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”
Any ideas anyone out there? Before I tear out whatever remaining ridiculous tuffs I still have remaining on top of my head. I would be eternally grateful. Really. For the remaining tuffs of hair I mean.
WoesPress Version 2.5 indeed. *sigh*
Like a number of things that I’d put off doing for whatever dread or excuse (but which ultimately I may need to face up to); I’d decided to upgrade to WordPress Version 2.5 finally last night.
And my apprehension is not unfounded as I now cannot post any photos to my post! FH2o: Kuching Kayaking without photos is like KFC chicken without the skin or durians without the smell or kayaking without water … whatever
I’ll sort this one out soon enough; I hope.
Kim was deliriously happy last night when she found out that her deliciously tacky post - “Your Guide to Malaysian Dreamgirl” in her decisively tacky blog - “deliciously.tacky” won first prize in a deviously tacky competition of that equally tacky television show - “Malaysian Dreamgirl”. What gives? I dunno.
I don’t read her blog (not that I’m jealous of the fact that her blog with around 500 hits a day is more than twice the number of hits on mine. Dang. But there’s no accounting for taste is there?) ‘cos it may give me the shudders on what she may blog about. I think she prefers it that way although she READS my blog. How otherwise would she know that my blog is ‘lame’?
Anyway I’m happy that she won RM500/- worth of prizes so that she would not bug me for more pocket money this month! It’s deliciously funny as well as heartwarming to be a dad sometimes. Delicious and not tacky, at all.
