Simply Sunday

Sep 30, 2007 Author: FH2o | Filed under: About Life, Blogging, Photography
I woke up early to get things ready for the kayaking trip for Azmi and his sister (who is helping him out) although I wouldn’t be able to join them. I managed to get on the waters on Saturday evening (will post on this later) so I didn’t feel so bad about missing out on the trip.

Later I went with my other half to the Charity Food Fair at the Civic Center in aid of the Autistic Children Association as she has baked some scones and chocolate muffins for the event after which we adjoined to have ‘kway chap’ breakfast at the corner coffee shop at Teochew Association in town.

Duly raising the cholesterol levels in our blood nourished and since we are already in town we went to the Petanak wet market to buy some vegetables and fruits. And we saw a bastard fruitcake on the drive home at the traffic lights who opened his car door and nonchalantly left his empty coke can on the road as if it was the most natural thing to do! What a pig! Despite 50 years on and having some first world infrastructure we are still very much a third world mentality country.

In the afternoon I decided to install WordPress after weeks of reading and thinking about trying it out. Forget the 5 minutes installation as I took over an hour and only managed to get it done with the kind assistance of Jee. Thanks Jee for your time, patience and generosity! And the result is here –which is work in progress and I’ll still be working on and when I have the confidence that I know what I’m doing; I’ll probably switch this blog over to WordPress too as the number of options and control one has makes Blogger looks like blogging for dummies! Yeah, I’m a dummy.

In the evening I went cycling alone as I wanted to take some photos and would be stopping frequently which can be amusing at first and annoying later if you’re cycling with others. Later I went out for dinner and drinks with some old friends and came home nicely but agreeably tired.

All in all it was a simply satisfying Sunday. Trust that yours was too!

Why I’m Still Blogging 2 Years On

I spent a good part of the weekend at home tidying up the new template for this blog. It’s all almost done except for the links which I’ll finish off next week. This must have been the third for fourth time that I’d changed the template but I can’t and usually don’t try to remember or keep track of this sort of things as I am way too busy with my life and stuffs. I feel good about the look of my blog now as I am starting to feel a little stale with my previous one. I think it loads faster too with all the unnecessary extras that I had gradually added to my previous template over time.

And it also dawned me that it has been more than 2 years since I started blogging and a lot of water has passed under the bridge so to speak. I think I have changed and so has my blog but yet though much have changed, the fundamentals haven’t - I still love what I do and it has become an ‘easy’ habit. I’ve not had any ‘blogger’s block’ yet and the topics for my post just come me whenever I sit down in front of my notebook. I really do not have the luxury of spending too my time on my blog. I must admit that since early this year; I had not even been visiting other people’s blogs - one of the reason I get much less comments to my posts these days. But the number of daily unique visitors have remained more or less the same hovering around the hundred mark. A big thank-you to you all for visiting. My blog still have plenty of nice (to me anyway) photos which I really love to take and share with others (and perhaps why I still get visitors!). And my picture taking has become natural and easy. I never have to ‘force’ any of the pictures I take and they seem to come naturally and I seem to be able to get good shots on a daily basis! I guess I must be pretty much in sync with the flow of life when it comes to this. Either that or I just have a good eye for beauty and an affinity with nature or just lucky or living in delusion that my photos are nice!
Kuching Kayaking: Fun on the waters while connecting with nature and the flow of life.

I still love my kayaking and that too has changed in that since I started Kuching Kayak Sdn Bhd in March 2006 as I am now sharing the beauty of the waters in Kuching with others and this year our business have more than doubled. I am truly blessed in that I can make my passion pay. With my kayaking business, my full time job as an architect and head of department in a main board public listed company and husband and father to 3 teenagers; I really have my hands full. So the above are the compelling reason(s) why I continue to blog so consistently for over 2 years now without getting stale, boring or burnt out - I hope!
KuchingFascinating sky and fascinating that I’m still blogging after 2 years!

Anyway of late due to my friend Justin, I am seriously thinking of monetizing my blog at the same time. I had experimented with it previously (rather clumsily I thought and with dismal results!) - mindful of course that nothing turns off regular readers then suddenly turning into a “money-face” blog. I find some adverts plain intrusive and darn annoying. It’s a matter of finding a balance. After 2 years of blogging with no commercial intent (apart from obviously directly people to my kayaking trips website) or content no one can accuse me of selling my arse soul for a bit of money. It’s actually not a bit of money as the top pro-bloggers rack in more than USD 10K and 20K each month! I find it fascinating that it is possible to make that much money from blogging. How on earth do they do that? There’s a lot to learn and a lot to find out and that to me is quite interesting, fun and hopefully financially rewarding. I think I’ll get there - eventually; even a quarter of the way is more than fine! But for now it’s back to the grind and here’s wishing you a productive week ahead! Thanks for visiting this blog - you folks are tops; now get back to your blady work before your boss catches you!

If you want to have more targeted readers to your Blog then you will want to know about BlogRush – the latest Blog syndication network.

All you need to do is register (IT’S FREE!) with them and add a FREE widget to your blog and sit back as your posts would automatically be promoted on related blogs across the internet. Check out BlogRush website and watch the video to learn how this powerful service works to exponentially grow your blog’s traffic. Who knows - maybe your blog will get even more hits than Kenny Sia! Dream on but meanwhile do something about it as this is a relatively new service and you want to be the early bird to capitalize on it.

What have you got to lose except perhaps your skepticism that people actually visit and read your lame posts! Whatever.

Here’s best wishes to your first one hundred or one thousand visitors!

Less is More

It’s kinda disheartening that your usual barber whom you always go to gives you a discount every time you visit him for a haircut as he has to spend less time and effort in doing so! *sigh*

On a more cheerful and brighter note, regular readers to my blog would have noticed that I have changed my template to one with less clutter. Hopefully it would load faster. Actually I had been meaning to do some ’spring cleaning’ to my template but last night I just decided to use a new template and add in the things that I want and exclude those that had been there for historical reasons. I want to cut out the fat on my blog and also on myself! Hmm. I am still sticking to the blogger platform although I have been contemplating switching over to using Wordpress for a while now. I want to but have not found the time to learn how to do so yet. Any kind souls out there want to lend this unker a hand?

Anyway I spent a good part of last night working on my template which I picked up from Pannasmontata. This time it is a 3 columns design and I hope you like it. Your comments/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for spending your time here and have a wonderful weekend.

Wet & Dry In Kuala Lumpur

Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaWet Friday night in Kuala Lumpur Bukit Bintang area. 7 September 2007

I just came back from Kuala Lumpur after spending 3 days there. I managed to get all my things done (well almost as unfortunately I couldn’t find the time to meet up with Agus!) but how I wished that it’s a Sunday tomorrow so that I can catch my breathe somewhat. Unfortunately there’s no such luxury as a busy Monday and work week awaits me. I sometimes wonder how I still manage to blog quite consistently somewhat despite my busy and demanding life. Perhaps I’ll make as good as juggler as Chris Bliss? I think it’s a matter of centering oneself, having a clarity about who we are and finding our balance in life. Whatever!

Mystery Visitors

Apr 30, 2007 Author: FH2o | Filed under: Blogging, Kuching Skies
There has been a sudden surge in the number of people visiting this blog over the past 2 weeks. When that happened before; it was because Kenny Sia mentioned me in his famous blog when I took him kayaking. He didn’t this time, even though he had linked me on his blog since last year (strange guy - he thinks that I’m cool!)

For a while now I had been too busy with work and life to even visit other blogs/sites.
Where do all these people come from?

Perhaps like the clouds in the sky, all we have to do is to appreciate that do appear; irregardless of their numbers - numerous or otherwise. They are all fascinating. Thanks for visiting wherever you come from and for whatever cool or uncool reason(s).
You folks must really like clouds as much as I do!

Be Well.

Spying Stats Counter

You may want to read this if you are thinking of installing a stats counter in your blog from any “Tom, Dick & Harry” stats provider (which are usually ‘free’). Just be careful.

Mystery Sky

Jan 17, 2007 Author: FH2o | Filed under: Blogging, Kuching Skies
Whatever happened to www.sixthseal.com? Like the strange ‘chemically’ coloured sky above, it’s a mystery but whatever is going on for Poh Huai Bin, I wished him well; even though I don’t know him personally apart from being an occasional reader of his original, brave, raw but honest blog; however controversial it may be. This picture is for you Huai Bin; and if you happen to be reading this - do get your ’shits’ back together again soon as we missed your blog; which hopefully could take on a more positive direction and not necessarily be on a self-destructive path …

Hoping for a return to normalcy

photo title ‘Miss Chernobyl 2004′ taken from http://www.tonyrogers.com

I had discovered in the past two days the disadvantage of having your blog hosted in overseas (the U.S.) servers following the aftermath of the damages to the undersea cables from the earthquake(s) in Taiwan. Particularly if the servers are not from some big companies which have more re-routing facilities. As it is my blog page now takes forever to load. I am now wishing that I’m hosted on blogger’s free servers instead. *sigh*

I wonder how many more days (not weeks I hope!) it would take for the connections to be restored before there would be a return to some semblance of normalcy to my blogging routine. I can’t believe that I’m talking like this even! Heavens forbid, I must qualify as a ‘blogger’ now whatever that term means or imply. *sigh*

New Blogger

Dec 20, 2006 Author: FH2o | Filed under: Blogging
The new blogger is ‘out of beta’ with new stuff like labels, drag-and-drop template editing, and privacy controls and I made the switch over yesterday evening. You can take a tour here to find out if it’s worth the trouble to make the switch as you can still sign in to use Blogger with either the New Blogger (using your Google account) or the Old Blogger (using your Blogger account).

I found out that it was no trouble at all provided you have a Google account already but you can always sign up for one anyway. The only trouble I had was that all my previous postings at www.fh2o.blogspot.com was gone now which I had expected anyway when I made the switch to publish at an external ftp instead of on the free blogspot.com. They are actually not ‘gone’ but were transferred, photos and all over to www.fh2o.kuchingkayak.com! And if you want to publish to an external FTP server, you will need to Set ‘Blog Readers’ to ‘Anybody’ and use a “Classic Template”. I suppose this effectively means that you would not be able to use the new features like labels (categories) that I was looking forward to using the classic template. Darn! Maybe someone can let me know how to include ‘labels’ in the classic template format that I’m currently using? I had ‘played’ around with the various new features and it’s really much easier to use and customise the templates now compared to the old blogger. A ‘no-brainer’ - I like it.

And I could now leave a notice at www.fh2o.blogspot.com to inform people of my migration to www.fh2o.kuchingkayak.com when I couldn’t previously. Maybe I can get some of my old readership back now. Hmm.

We’ll see how things go. *sigh*
