Have a “Fern” Sunday (Kayaking in Kuching)

by FH2o on August 17, 2008

Early in the week I received a call inquiring about the suitability of our rainforest kayaking adventure trip for families with young children comprising a small group of about 6. I explained that it is fine as our trips are designed for beginners and suitable for all ages without any serious medical condition. The gentleman called me back several times over the course of the week and with each call adding more and more people to his group! No dates on when they would like to do the trip was mentioned. Then on Friday he confirmed that they would like to do it this Sunday and by which time his group of friends have increased to 16! That was fine as although we have another group going out then, we still have enough kayaks and guides to take care of them.

A happy group of Koreans having fun at the start of their kayaking trip @ the Kg Bengoh put-in at Borneo Highlands, Kuching. 17 August 2008

However yesterday evening I received another call asking us if we could accomodate another family of five bringing the total to 21! And again another call last night pleading us to take in another group of 10 but which of course we couldn’t as we were well overbooked already with another group going out under the care of Bev. Sorry.

I think one of the best fun and adventure thing to do while on holidays or vacation in Kuching is to take our rain forest kayaking trip floating down the beautiful jungles of Borneo. I’m bias of course but to me it is the only true “world class” attraction that we have in Kuching, Sarawak and probably in Malaysia. We have taken out enough tourists from all over the world over the past 2 or so years to know that this is not an empty boast.

Green fern leaves Malaysia

Not green with envy but having a “fern” Sunday at home. 17th August 2007 .

Anyway I wished I could have joined them this Sunday morning kayaking through the beautiful rainforests but I’m nursing a pulled left shoulder and have to contend myself with having a “fern” Sunday at home enjoying my garden. Trusting that your weekend have been fun and ideally a green one as well. Not green with envy but earth friendly.

Splashing Time on the Waters @ Borneo Highlands, Kuching

by FH2o on August 15, 2008

Zoe & Varena having a splashing good time under a waterfall @ Borneo Highlands. 15 August 2008 Photo by Azmi, edited by FH2o

While I was put through the grille this week during our budget review meetings Azmi and Max are having a splashing good time out kayaking on the waters of Borneo Highland. Azmi told me that today was a particularly pleasant day and when I saw the photos he took of Zoe Last from Ipswich, England and Verena Aumaur of Vienna, Austria I can clearly understand why. Guess who has a better job huh? *sigh*

Irregardless, here’s wishing you all a splashing good time this weekend.

Do More With Less

by FH2o on August 14, 2008

Regardless of what lies you read in the Malaysian newspapers, all is not well in Malaysia under Pak Lah’s leadership and most businesses are already experiencing the downturn and are quietly shifting into “recession planning”. I hate the usage of this word as unlike some fuckwits people in our organization, thinking negatively and mistrusting people upfront; just goes against my nature. Why plan to fail and expect the worst from people? And I think it’s especially shameful when this is used as an excuse to trim or even not to dispense bonuses.

Anyway the management buzz word where I work is “recession planning” and now it irks me even more when some ass hole smart alec ass-licker has even coined a slogan to go with this stupid “recession planning” parroting when they sign off their memos with “Do More with Less”. *puke, puke* I would love to see if they are still gleefully smiling their fugly silly faces off in front of the bosses when their salaries are cut and their workloads increased. Duh!

Do More With Less

Clear and unpretentious sign in Bintulu - no empty slogans needed.

Perhaps they could learn a thing or two from these 2 examples I spotted in Bintulu where I was on Monday and Tuesday from two very different walks of life; instead of just dispensing meaningless and insincere management catch cry. First was this lady selling drinks from her bicycle and with her simple hand written cardboard is really doing more with less in marketing her business.

The second is a simple clinic which one could easily have dismissed as that of a “back country” doctor especially when it’s only occupying half of a small shop lot. However on closer examination you would have noticed the simple sign showing the next visiting date and time from top name medical specialists from Kuching! I think this “simple country doctor” is way smarter than these city slickers medical specialists.

Bintulu Clinic Sign

I suppose we should be grateful that it’s only “Do More with Less” and not “Do More with Less, and Do it Faster!” *gulp* Now I can go back to watching the Beijing 2008 Olympics and which is reason enough for my irregular postings.

SESCO - Sarawak Electricity Surprise Crap Organisation

Floating Lighted Candles

Decorative display candles put to good use. 9th August 2008

Thanks (and no thanks really) to SESCO, Jim’s surprise 16th year old birthday last night turned out to be more than a surprise with a 3 hours plus long statewide power blackout!

Surprise Birthday Party

A surprise birthday party - in the dark!

Yeah - after 45 years of ‘independence’, we still can’t get our basic infrastructure in order. What a display of incompetence.

I suppose that “… when the going gets tough; we can all hide in the dark.” *sigh*

Sarawak Laksa @ 98 Kopitiam, Tabuan Jaya Baru

by FH2o on August 8, 2008

Sarawak Laksa @ 98 Kopitiam Kuching

My latest Sarawak Laksa discovery in Kuching @ 98 Kopitiam, Tabuan Jaya Baru. Yummy!

I do love my laksa (amongst other things), so when a friend alerted me to this new Sarawak Laksa stall which he claims is comparable to my favourite laksa stall at Chong Choon, Abell Road; I immediately arrange to meet up with him to have lunch there.

Let me cut to the chase – its bloody good! And it’s a bargain too at RM3.50 with generous servings of prawns and the all important gravy. Sure the “bee-hoon” (rice vermicelli) was slightly overcooked (too soft) and they had just run out of coriander which to a true Sarawak Laksa connoisseur is a must-have garnishing.

I think their business can only get better with the eagerly awaited (by all Kuching IT geeks) opening of OneTJ ICT, Kuching’s equivalent of KL’s Low Yat Plaza for all things IT, in October 2008 which is just next door.

And as if it’s an omen of more good Sarawak Laksa discoveries to come; I woke up the next day to a brilliant ‘Sarawak Laksa’ coloured sky the next morning! Here’s wishing that great discoveries awaits you this weekend. Whatever.
